Ahhh summer, at last, it’s time to relax and enjoy some sun, right? Yes, but before you make road trip plans, your vehicle will need some car care. Below are the top 10 car tips to keep your vehicle in tiptop shape this summer.

Coolant System

Keeping cool in the summer is important, not just for ourselves but also for our cars. When you check the coolant level in your used car in Calgary, be sure to assess the state of the hoses and the coolant reservoir. Check to see if you spot any leaks, in specific at joint and connection points like where a hose connects to the engine block. In addition, when the engine is cool, squeeze the hoses every so often to ensure they feel firm and aren’t overly soft or squishy.

Engine Belts

Typically, there is a serpentine belt that runs between the alternator, the fan and a number of other components. This can deteriorate, loosen, begin to squeal and can even break without a definite reason. It must be in good condition and at the right amount of tension. If you notice cracks in the belt or missing pieces, you’ll need to replace them.

Wipers

Although it’s summer and we’re all rooting for sunny days, the weather is unpredictable, which is why we’ll need to ensure our wipers are in good condition. When whippers are worn, they can create unsightly streaks across your windshield and obstruct your vision when you drive. Replacing your wipers won’t cost you much, but it can be a tricky operation. Some dealerships will sell you wipers and install them free of charge.

Other Essential Fluids

How do your brakes feel? Are they lacking in bite? Or do they seem a tad spongy? If the answer is yes, new brake pads and a system bleed might be needed. You’ll need to visit a mechanic or dealership for assistance. In addition, always check your oil, brake, power-steering and windshield-washer fluids, as you use these fluids on a regular basis.

Air-Conditioning System

Let’s be honest; one of the worst things that can happen to your used car in Calgary this summer is having broken air conditioning! If the system hasn’t been functioning normally in the colder months, now is the time to fix it. If the system is on the older side, leaking Freon in the atmosphere is not good. There is a range of leak-sealing products and refrigerant recharges you can purchase from stores like Walmart. Note, you’ll have a leak if there’s not sufficient refrigerant in the system. Before paying to have the air-conditioning system recharged, ask a mechanic to fix the leak.

Air Filter

Fall and winter can leave behind leaves and lots of them too. These leaves can clog up drainage points, windshield-washer nozzles and your used car in Calgary’s air filter. Summer is likely a wise time to purchase a new one or remove the current one and clean it. A lot of new cars also have pollen filters or cabin filtration systems, so be sure to remove those for cleaning as well. In some cases, you can easily clean these cabin filters yourself, but when in doubt, visit a technician.

Tires

Whether it’s fall, winter, spring or summer, checking your tires is always necessary. Pressures must be correct; take a look at the manual as sometimes information can be found on the inside of the fuel door or the door jamb for the driver’s door. There should be no treads, stray nails and all of the tires should be in good condition. When we speak about good condition, we mean that it is free from cracks or uneven wear and has lots of tread depth. Also, don’t forget to have a can of Fix-A-Flat in case you need to change a tire.

Dashboard Sunshade

A windshield cover can protect the dashboard from ultraviolet rays and help the cabin stay somewhat cooler whenever you’re parked outside. Some windshield covers also have panels that keep the battery charged. Shades for the rear windows are a good idea too, as they can provide some protection for passengers in the back, such as children. Plus, it can protect the rear seats, dashboard and other areas from fading throughout time.
